Applied research has played a vital role in recent times in transforming emerging management philosophies into potent artefacts in the hands of business. Besides training, NITIE conducts applied research and it undertakes various public and private sectors' special projects as sponsored research. At NITIE, the focus of research is on functionality. The faculty and doctoral (Fellow) students strive to adapt theoretical concepts from the world over, study and deliberate upon them, and then probe their effectiveness generally when applied in the Indian context. Such work aims at delivering practicable results and competitive methods to practitioners in industry. Areas covered are diverse and have included credit card fraud detection, factors to make ERP implementation effective, environmental interventions, supply chain optimization, data mining, technology management, truck fleet management and many novel OD interventions, among others.
NITIE's faculty members have varied intellectual proclivity. They are drawn from diverse basic disciplines in humanities, technology and management. Most have hands-on experience in business, industry or government as well. Many are distinguished professionals, trainers and leading authors in management. As instructors they regularly engage students, practicing managers and administrators to inspire them toward superior quality decision making and a solicitous execution of their responsibilities. They undertake sponsored research regularly while most guide Fellow students in their investigative pursuits.
Aided by the Government, NITIE has established a Centre of Excellence in Ergonomics and Human Factor Engineering (CEEHFE) as part of Government of India's Technology Mission-2020 through TIFAC (Technology Information Forecasting and Assessment Council) - mission REACH (Relevance and Excellence in Achieving New Heights) in educational system. NITIE has a very active research group engaged in environmental studies. NITIE has also established an Advanced Centre of Excellence in Operations and Manufacturing Management that is equipped with ERP/MRP-II, CAD/CAM, Pro-engineer, EDM and QUEST software.
Each quarter, NITIE publishes a professional journal-UDYOG PRAGATI. This publication elucidates new developments in industrial engineering and allied fields. Members of the NITIE Alumni Association are entitled to a free copy of UDYOG PRAGATI. Participants of Management Development Programmes are also eligible to become members of alumni. Additionally, NITIE periodically circulates NITIE NEWS, a reporter also available electronically that contains information about Institute's activities of interest to industries, educational institutions and the alumni.
